I’d never call myself a sports photographer. I shot my fair share of sportscar and rally racing images but that was many many years ago. But sports photography is a completely different world which I hardly know anything about.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t like to get out of my comfort zone and shoot a cycling classic when the chance presents itself. I was shooting a corporate event at the side of a piece cobblestone road know as the “Pavé de la Roseé”. I loved getting out there in the dust and try to get some decent shots. It was pretty hard because these cyclist flash by immensely fast and even with a camera which has a great autofocusing system I had a hard time getting the cyclist tacksharp in focus.
It might not be the best work I’ve ever shot but I had good fun doing it.
These are just my 3 favorite shots but you can see the entire gallery on the FHP facebook page (likes are always welcome ;-))
And finally. While I’m pretty proud of some of my images, I know two colleagues who are specialized in this sort of thing and shoot some amazing images and thats Tom Vander Heyden & Kristof Ramon.

Not bad, not bad, some panning shots would have been cool to, wish i’ve could have been there, never had the chance to photograph such a huge race.
You obviously have the extra difficulty that if you stay static in a race like this, you only get so much time… I’ve done some waterpolo and swimming, and at least if you don’t get it right in the first half, you get a second (ant third) opportunity.
And you can go for some razor sharp, ‘stopped in time’ shots as well as the panning shots.
Reminds me I should get out with our ladies waterpolo team more often! Second team in Britain and there are almost no photographs.
Knap!
